Building a meaningful career often starts with seeing what’s possible.

Through StartSmart, one of our Associate Resource Groups, we’re sharing real stories from associates across PetSmart to spotlight how growth actually happens. Not by chance, but through experience, resilience, and the courage to step into something new.

In this spotlight, Laura, Director of Pricing, shares her 20-year journey, the lessons that shaped her, and what growth looks like in action.

Q: What does your career path look like?

I started with PetSmart in 2004 as a cashier in one of our stores. I spent eight years in retail roles, which gave me a strong foundation in the business and a deep understanding of our customers and associates.

After a short break from the company, a former leader encouraged me to apply for a role at our Phoenix Home Office. That moment opened the door to a new chapter.

Since then, I’ve built my career within the pricing team, growing from an analyst to my current role as Director of Pricing. In total, I’ve been with PetSmart for 20 years.

Q: Which of our values connect most to your journey?

Excellence in All We Do and Team PetSmart have shaped how I approach my career.

I try to bring a growth mindset to everything I do, staying curious and always looking for ways to learn. Not just for my own development, but so I can bring that knowledge back to my team. I’ve also been fortunate to work alongside leaders and peers who truly embody Team PetSmart. From sharing knowledge to challenging each other in constructive ways, that support has helped me step outside my comfort zone and keep growing.

Q: What impact does your role have on the business?

Working in Merchandise Operations means every day is different. From analyzing competitive pricing to testing new processes, my role uses data to help our partners make informed decisions. While pricing might seem straightforward, the impact is far-reaching.

It influences how customers perceive value, how we compete in the market, and ultimately how we serve pet parents and their pets.

Q: What support has helped you grow your career?

Getting involved in Associate Resource Groups and building strong mentorship relationships has been incredibly important. ARGs provide a sense of community and connection. They create space to learn from others with shared experiences and remind you that you’re not navigating your career alone. Mentorship has also played a big role. I’ve benefited from:

  • Peer mentors who offer day-to-day support and feedback

  • Personal mentors who understand life beyond work

  • Formal mentors who provide insight into different areas of the business

Each has helped shape my path and given me the confidence to keep moving forward.

Q: Have you faced challenges that helped you grow?

One of the most defining moments in my career came from receiving feedback that I wasn’t suited for a leadership role. It stuck with me. For a while, it made me question what I was capable of.

But over time, I learned not to let one perspective define my future. Instead of accepting a “no,” I started asking “why?” and using that feedback to improve.

I also learned the importance of sharing my goals. When you’re open about where you want to go, you build a network of people who can help you get there.

That experience taught me resilience and how to advocate for myself, skills I still rely on today.

Q: What advice would you give associates looking to grow their careers?

Step outside your comfort zone. Some of the most impactful moments in my career came from taking chances on something new. Take the time to understand what brings you fulfillment and what your strengths are. When you build your career around those, you not only perform better, you feel more connected to the work you’re doing.
