From District Leader to Driving Store Performance: A PetSmart Career Built on Saying Yes

When Angel joined PetSmart in 2008 as a District Leader in Philadelphia, the company was opening nearly 100 stores a year. It was fast-paced, high-growth, and full of opportunity... the kind of environment where careers don’t just progress, they evolve.

Seventeen years later, Angel’s journey reflects exactly that. ✨

Today, as Senior Director of Store Performance Acceleration, she leads a team focused on helping underperforming stores diagnose challenges and improve financial performance. But her path wasn’t linear, and that’s what makes it meaningful.

Growth Isn’t Always Predictable — And That’s the Point

Angel describes her career in three words: unpredictable, transformative, fulfilling. And after years in the field, she stepped into a Director role at the Home Office and relocated to Phoenix. Just 15 months later, a reorganization eliminated her role.

But, instead of leaving, Angel leaned in. She returned to the field as a PetSmart District Leader in Southern Arizona, staying close to the stores, the teams, and the work that mattered most. That decision ultimately led her to her current role, where she now drives impact at a broader level. Her experience reflects a reality candidates don’t always hear: growth isn’t always linear—but at PetSmart, it is possible.

A Culture That Invests in Potential

A defining part of Angel’s journey has been the people around her.

“I have a boss who has always believed in my potential, even when my performance didn’t always reflect it.”

That belief created confidence—and momentum. Beyond leadership support, Angel also built connections through PetSmart’s Associate Resource Groups, including her involvement with MOSAIC as both a communications and culture lead.

“It introduced me to so many people I wouldn’t have met otherwise.”

For candidates, that signals something important: growth here isn’t just about roles—it’s about relationships.

Staying Close to What Matters

Even in a senior leadership role, Angel stays grounded by spending time in stores.

“Being in stores keeps me connected to what matters.”

That connection shows up in how she leads, building strong relationships with District and Store Leaders, and helping teams succeed where it counts most: serving pet parents. It also ties back to the value that first drew her to #LifeAtPetSmartCustomer First.

“As a customer, I loved the experience. Helping solve problems or introduce someone to something new—that’s still one of the most fulfilling parts of the job.”

Growing YOUR Career

Angel’s advice is simple and direct:

  • Say yes to opportunities, even if you don’t feel ready

  • Stay uncomfortable — growth happens there

  • Get involved beyond your role

  • Protect what matters — define your non negotiables outside of work

And if she could go back to day one?

“Pay attention — it goes by quickly.”

Why PetSmart?

For Angel, it comes down to opportunity, impact, and purpose. From leading districts to shaping performance strategy across stores, her career has been anything but predictable, and exactly what she needed it to be.

If you’re looking for a place where you can grow, pivot, and make a real impact—PetSmart might be it.
