From a Mart to PetSmart: Powered by Pet-Loving People

For more than 40 years, PetSmart has been built on a simple idea: helping pets and pet parents experience more joy together. What began as a retail “mart” has grown into something much bigger—thanks to the people who show up every day to care for pets and the communities that love them.
Today, more than 50,000 PetSmart associates across North America bring that mission to life. In our stores and communities, they help pet parents make the smart choice for their pets through expert guidance, trusted services and a shared passion for animals.
From cashiers and pet care experts to groomers, trainers, hotel hosts and veterinarians, associates work together to create meaningful moments for pets and pet parents every day. Our work also extends beyond our stores through partnerships with thousands of local adoption organizations, helping nearly 12 million pets find loving homes.
A Culture Built Around Belonging
At PetSmart, associates are the heart of everything we do. Because they share the same passion for pets as the pet parents we serve, they help create a culture that gives us a unique edge.
We are committed to empowering associates to pursue healthy, fulfilling lives and careers. That includes creating an environment where every associate feels they belong and where diverse backgrounds, perspectives and experiences are valued. When associates feel supported and included, they’re able to do their best work—and deliver an exceptional experience for pet parents.
One way we bring this culture to life is through our seven Associate Resource Groups (ARGs), including Pride at Work, Mosaic, StartSmart, AVID, SERVE, PROVIDE and WISE. These voluntary groups help associates connect, grow and build community while supporting a culture of inclusion across the organization.
Showing Up for Each Other
PetSmart associates also make a difference beyond the workplace. In 2023 alone, associates contributed more than 17,000 hours of paid volunteer time to their communities. And when associates face unexpected hardships, the PetSmart Associate Assistance Fund (PAAF)—funded by donations from both PetSmart and our associates—helps provide financial assistance and emergency support when it’s needed most.
More Than a “Mart”
Over the decades, PetSmart has evolved far beyond a place to buy pet supplies. Because of the people behind the mission—associates, partners and communities—we’ve grown into something more.
