Pawsitive Workplace Practices: Keeping the Pack Safe!

At PetSmart, our commitment goes beyond caring for pets—we are dedicated to creating a safe and healthy environment for our associates, too. By focusing on well-being, health, and safety, we ensure that everyone has the proper tools and training to excel in their roles across the business.

PetSmart's Loss Prevention & Safety (LPS) teams prioritize keeping the pack safe at our stores, distribution centers, online, and home offices. In 2024, we have introduced several LPS programs and initiatives to further enhance our safety measures within #LifeAtPetSmart. Check them all out below!

Expanded PPE Catalog: We've broadened our catalog of available personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure our associates have access to the latest and most effective safety gear.

Annual Pet Safety Certification: This certification is mandatory for all service associates and leaders. It aims to increase awareness of identifying and responding to pet health concerns and preventing pet incidents.

Annual Associate Safety Certification: All store and distribution center (DC) associates and leaders must complete this certification, which reviews safety protocols to prevent common incidents and injuries. This training includes Active Shooter Preparedness, equipping our associates with the knowledge to stay safe within and outside PetSmart.

Loss Prevention and Safety Awareness Program: This program features rotating monthly safety topics for associate and pet safety, prioritizing incident and injury prevention. It also includes monthly safety team meetings where associates and leaders can address potential hazards and discuss ways to enhance safety in their store or DC.

Central Bark Engagement: We leverage Central Bark, our internal communications tool, to engage associates in safety discussions and the exchange of best practices.

Open Communication Channels: The LP and Safety team maintains an open communication channel with all associates, encouraging them to raise any questions or concerns.

PetSmart's Manager of LP & Safety reports that through our continued focus on safety practices for our associates and pets, we have experienced a 5% improvement in the year-to-date associate safety rate across stores and distribution centers compared to the same time last year. Additionally, we have seen a 3% improvement in pet safety.
